Veteran Benefits for In-Home Care

By Jody Robinson

When a loved one begins to need help at home, most families know exactly what they want: safety, comfort, dignity, and compassionate support that allows someone they care about to remain in familiar surroundings. What they often don’t know is how to pay for it.

Between private insurance, long-term care policies, out-of-pocket expenses and the maze of potential benefits that may exist, the financial side of caregiving can feel just as overwhelming as the emotional side. For many families across South Orange County, that uncertainty becomes the most stressful part of the journey.

For the past 15 years, Home Helpers of Orange Coast has worked to make that path easier to navigate. Known for providing trusted in-home care throughout the region, the agency has also become a valuable resource for families simply trying to understand their options.

“About 75 percent of my calls are from people just looking for information,” says owner Dwight Brown. “Caregiving is emotional enough. People shouldn’t also have to struggle to understand what help they qualify for.”

A Benefit Many Veterans Don’t Realize They Have

One of the most significant — and often overlooked — sources of support comes through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Many veterans and their families are unaware that the VA may cover non-medical in-home care services, helping make it possible for seniors to remain safely and comfortably at home. These services can include assistance with bathing and dressing, meal preparation, mobility, medication reminders and companionship.

“I can’t tell you how many veterans or their children have no idea these benefits exist,” Dwight says. “When we explain that the VA may help pay for the care they need, the relief is immediate. You can almost see the weight lift.”

Home Helpers works directly with the VA to help families understand eligibility and coordinate services. For households already juggling medical appointments and changing health needs, having a knowledgeable partner who understands the process can make a meaningful difference.

Guidance Through a Complex System

Of course, VA benefits are only one piece of the puzzle. Families often find themselves sorting through private insurance policies, long-term care plans and personal budgets as they determine what kind of care is possible.

Owner Dwight Brown

Dwight’s earlier career with respected healthcare organizations including CareMore and SCAN Health Plan gave him a rare insider’s perspective on how coverage systems work. Today, that experience helps Home Helpers guide families through decisions that might otherwise feel confusing or overwhelming.

“We’ve seen every type of care situation,” he says. “Because of that experience, we know how to simplify the process and help families move forward with confidence.”

Just as important as the logistics is the care itself. Home Helpers of Orange Coast maintains a large network of experienced caregivers across the region, allowing the team to thoughtfully match each client with someone whose personality and approach fits the family’s needs.

Because caregiving, at its heart, is deeply personal.

“A great match feels natural,” Dwight says. “It feels like family.”

For families searching for compassionate, reliable support — and a little clarity along the way — Home Helpers of Orange Coast continues to serve as both a caregiver and a guide, helping loved ones remain where they feel most comfortable: at home.
