Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort & Spa

Coastal Escape, Closer to Home

By Jody Robinson

There are staycations that feel like a quick break from routine – and then there are the ones that genuinely reset the rhythm of a family summer. For my husband and I with two teens in tow, a recent weekend at Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort & Spa landed firmly in the second category.

Perched high on a coastal bluff above Dana Point Harbor, the resort has that unmistakable first impression effect – the red-roofed, Victorian-inspired architecture feels both iconic and familiar, like it has always belonged to this stretch of coastline.

We checked into a spacious suite with an adjoining guestroom that immediately leaned into its surroundings: soft coastal tones, natural light pouring in, with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the beautiful landscape and ocean beyond (for me, morning coffee tasted better with sailboats drifting in the distance).

The resort’s 371 guest rooms and suites are designed for exactly that balance – refined but relaxed, elegant without feeling untouchable. It’s the kind of space where sandy feet don’t feel entirely out of place after a beach run, which, for a family trip, matters more than you’d think.

Pool Days and Easy Summer Living

If there is a heartbeat to the property in summer, it’s the pool deck. We spent an afternoon there and quickly understood why. Between the heated pool, the Kid’s Splash Zone, and the surrounding lounge spaces, it naturally pulls families into a shared kind of vacation rhythm – somewhere between activity and complete surrender to doing nothing at all.

Being on the older side of “childhood,” our teens immediately gravitated toward the more playful zones – ping pong tables, open lawn games, and the energy of other families settling into their own versions of downtime – while I moved toward the shade with a good book, and the occasional glance at the horizon that never quite gets old here.

Camp Cliffs and the Art of Keeping Kids Engaged

One of the things the resort does especially well is layered programming for families. Camp Cliffs Kid’s Club offers an open invitation into creativity (think kids painting mini wooden surfboards and working on small ocean-inspired crafts that will make their way into suitcases headed home).

There’s also a sense that everything is designed to connect back to place – Dana Point’s maritime identity, its marine life, and its long relationship with the ocean. Even something as simple as a scavenger hunt for miniature ceramic elephants (a nod to the city’s Elephant Parade installations) becomes a storytelling experience for kids moving across the property.
The resort’s partnership with the nearby Ocean Institute adds an enriching dimension to a summer stay, giving families the opportunity to experience Dana Point’s extraordinary marine environment beyond the resort grounds. Through curated coastal adventures, guests can set sail aboard the historic Spirit of Dana Point, explore tide pools, encounter sharks and other marine life, and participate in hands-on ocean science programs led by the Institute’s naturalists. Back at the resort, the family-friendly lineup continues with Camp Cliffs, splash-zone fun, poolside activities, surf lessons, lawn yoga and easy access to harbor excursions, creating the kind of effortless, memory-making vacation where education and adventure go hand in hand. It’s a partnership that perfectly captures the spirit of summer in Dana Point – equal parts relaxation, discovery and appreciation for the remarkable coastline just beyond the bluff.

Evenings That Stretch Into the Sky

Summer evenings are equally inviting, with family-friendly movie nights under the stars on the Ocean View Lawn or “Dive-In” movies at the pool, where kids float on inflatable loungers while parents unwind poolside. It’s one of those simple vacation moments that somehow becomes a favorite memory – watching a movie with a salty ocean breeze, palm trees swaying overhead and not a care in the world.

In the evenings, there are stargazing programs led with the Los Angeles Astronomical Society. Looking up through a high-powered telescope adds an unexpected dimension to the stay – one that felt surprisingly grounding. It’s not often a resort evening ends with Saturn in view, but here it fits.

Dining across the resort is defined by a California coastal sensibility. From poolside bites to more polished evening options, there’s a consistency in approach: seasonal ingredients and ocean-adjacent inspiration.

The Harbor Just Below – and What’s Next

One of the resort’s greatest advantages is its proximity to Dana Point Harbor. A short ride down the hill puts you into a world of whale-watching boats, paddleboards, fishing charters, and waterfront walking paths. With the $600 million harbor revitalization underway, there’s a sense that this already dynamic destination is only beginning to evolve, with new restaurants, retail, and public spaces on the horizon.

By the time we packed up to leave, there was a collective feeling that we hadn’t gone very far at all – geographically, of course, but also emotionally. That’s the subtle magic of a well-executed staycation: it doesn’t ask you to escape your life, just to experience it from a slightly higher vantage point.

From the bluff-top views to the layered family programming to the simple luxury of time together, Laguna Cliffs delivered something increasingly rare in a busy coastal life – space to slow down without leaving anything behind.
