When the Caregiver Needs a Vacation Too

By Jay Minor

Caregiving is one of the most loving things a person can do. It is also one of the most exhausting.

Across South Orange County, many families are caring for an aging parent while balancing careers, raising children, and managing busy households. Medications, meals, doctor appointments, and daily routines become part of everyday life, often leaving little time to recharge.

Summer tends to bring this challenge into sharper focus. Weddings, family reunions, and long-planned vacations fill the calendar, prompting the same difficult question: What do we do about Mom or Dad while we’re away?

For many families, the answer is to stay home. Trips are postponed or canceled because leaving a loved one behind doesn’t feel like an option.

Fortunately, there often is another solution.

A Break that Benefits Everyone

Respite care is one of the most underutilized resources in senior living. It allows an older adult to stay in an assisted living community for a short period—typically two to four weeks—while family caregivers travel or simply take a well-deserved break. During their stay, seniors receive professional care, daily support, meals, and activities in a fully furnished apartment, giving families peace of mind while they’re away.

I recently helped a local family whose mother was living with early-stage dementia. She couldn’t safely stay home alone while the family traveled overseas, so we found a nearby community offering respite care.

The experience exceeded everyone’s expectations.

She quickly connected with several residents who shared her love of bridge, forming new friendships that continued after her family returned. In fact, they’re already planning another respite stay—not because they have to, but because she genuinely enjoyed the experience.

Stories like this are a reminder that respite care isn’t simply a practical solution for caregivers. It can also enrich the life of the senior, providing companionship, activities, and a refreshing change of scenery.

Planning Ahead for Peace of Mind

Because not every assisted living community offers respite care—and availability can be limited—planning ahead is important. Finding the right fit depends on both availability and the level of care your loved one requires, which is where working with a local senior living advisor can make the process much easier.

If you’re planning a summer trip or simply need time to recharge, I’d be happy to help you explore whether respite care is right for your family. I can also answer questions about assisted living, memory care, or any stage of the senior living journey.

There is no cost for my guidance and no obligation—just an honest conversation about your family’s needs and the options available.

You have given so much to the people you love. It’s okay to take care of yourself, too.
