A Shared Love of Sushi at Sushi Roku

By Jody Robinson

I’ve always considered myself something of a fledgling foodie. I appreciate beautifully prepared meals, love discovering new restaurants, and rarely pass up the chance to try a chef’s latest creation. But when it comes to sushi, my standards are admittedly high.

I come by them honestly.

As someone of Japanese descent, I grew up enjoying the traditional dishes my grandmother prepared with remarkable care and simplicity. She believed fresh ingredients needed little embellishment and that every detail mattered – from perfectly seasoned rice to impeccably fresh seafood. Those early meals quietly shaped my palate, and over the years they’ve made me especially discerning whenever I sit down at a sushi bar.

Apparently, I’ve passed those expectations along to my 19-year-old son.

He’s become a true seafood and sushi aficionado, often researching restaurants before we visit and eagerly introducing me to new varieties of fish or innovative preparations. Finding a place that genuinely impresses both of us isn’t always easy.

Where Tradition Meets Innovation

Sushi Roku at Fashion Island does exactly that.

From the moment we arrived, the restaurant struck the perfect balance of contemporary sophistication and relaxed coastal energy. The sleek interior, lively atmosphere, and inviting outdoor patio overlooking Fashion Island create the kind of setting that encourages you to slow down, order another round, and savor the evening.

Then came the food.

Every plate reflected the precision and artistry that great Japanese cuisine deserves. The fish was impeccably fresh, the rice perfectly prepared, and each bite showcased a thoughtful balance of flavor rather than unnecessary excess. While Sushi Roku embraces contemporary Japanese cuisine with creative rolls and bold combinations, it never loses sight of the quality of the seafood itself.

That’s what impressed us most.

My son immediately declared the nigiri among the freshest he’d enjoyed in Orange County, and I wholeheartedly agreed. We sampled an assortment of sashimi, specialty rolls, and several of the restaurant’s signature creations, happily passing plates back and forth across the table as we debated our favorites. It’s the kind of meal where every new dish becomes a conversation.

Beyond sushi, Sushi Roku’s menu offers beautifully prepared seafood, premium steaks, and inventive hot dishes, making it an ideal destination whether everyone at the table is a sushi enthusiast or not. The attentive, knowledgeable service elevated the experience even further, guiding us through recommendations without ever making dinner feel rushed.

For me, though, the evening was about more than exceptional food.

Sharing a meal like this with my son has become one of my favorite traditions. Our mutual appreciation for fresh seafood and thoughtfully prepared Japanese cuisine has given us countless memorable dinners over the years, and Sushi Roku ranks at the very top of that list.

When we both leave a restaurant already talking about what we’ll order on our next visit, I know we’ve discovered something special.

For two discerning sushi lovers – one raised on the traditions of a Japanese grandmother and the other carrying that appreciation into a new generation – Sushi Roku isn’t simply another sushi restaurant. It’s one we’ll happily return to again and again.
