I’m not your typical art gallery-goer, but I have to say I was intrigued by the concept of a cannabis retail space that also happens to be a functional art gallery.
As the first licensed recreational cannabis dispensary in Laguna Woods, The Artist Tree differs from any other cannabis or retail brand. Moreso, the Artist Tree’s origin story is fascinating. Lauren Fontein started her career as a corporate attorney in Los Angeles after graduating from UCLA’s prestigious law school. Sensing a need for direct service to the hundreds of medical dispensaries in the area, Lauren transitioned to the cannabis industry, and a few short years later founded The Artist Tree with her partners. Serving as Chief Compliance Officer since 2018, Lauren handles licensing and legal matters, but additionally oversees the art program and community benefit efforts.
With deep roots in the cannabis community and having operated licensed dispensaries for over 13 years, Lauren and her partners sought to “shatter stereotypes surrounding cannabis consumption by creating welcoming, inclusive and innovative venues that promote cannabis exploration and local arts culture.”
“We want to be known for looking unlike any other cannabis dispensary,” says Lauren with a subtle nod to the closed-off, dim, big-box cannabis retailers. “Our open floor plans, floor-to-ceiling windows, and numerous art displays all provide a unique venue for consumption, community, and classes.”
The Artist Tree features a variety of events that pair well with cannabis, including open mic nights, painting and sound bathing classes, stand-up comedy nights, and even … (pun completely intended) “high” tea.
