Heroes Supporting Heroes

An Evening Where Service Takes on New Meaning

By Jody Robinson

There’s something especially powerful about seeing those who protect our community step out of their daily roles—and into something far more personal. At this year’s Heroes Supporting Heroes Tip-A-Cop event, held on March 11th at Brio Tuscany Grille in Dana Point, Orange County’s first responders traded radios for serving trays, volunteering their time to wait on guests in a heartfelt show of support for a truly inspiring cause.

From 5 to 9 p.m., members of the OC Sheriff’s Department and OC Fire Authority partnered with local Special Olympics athletes to create an evening that was equal parts uplifting and unforgettable. The energy in the room was immediate—warm, welcoming, and filled with a shared sense of purpose.

A Night of Service and Connection

As guests settled in to enjoy Brio’s signature Italian fare, they were greeted not only by attentive service, but by the unmistakable presence of the men and women who serve our community every day. Only this time, instead of responding to emergencies, they were delivering meals, sharing smiles, and connecting with diners in a more personal way.

Alongside them, Special Olympics athletes brought their own spirit of joy and determination, reminding everyone in attendance exactly why the evening matters.

The Tip-A-Cop format, a beloved tradition across the country, invites law enforcement and fire personnel to step into the role of “celebrity servers,” collecting tips that go directly to supporting Special Olympics programs.

“For many years, this event has been close to our hearts,” say Peppe Rivera and Enzo Scognamilio, owners of Brio Tuscany Grille. “Being a part of Heroes Supporting Heroes is more than just hosting a night at the restaurant—it’s about standing alongside the first responders and athletes who inspire us all. We are proud to continue this tradition and grateful for the opportunity to give back to a cause that brings our community together in such a meaningful way.”

Supporting a Powerful Mission

The impact of the evening extends far beyond a single night. Twenty percent of all event sales were donated to Special Olympics Southern California, helping fund year-round sports training and competition opportunities for athletes with intellectual disabilities. These programs not only promote physical fitness, but also build confidence, friendships, and a sense of belonging.

For many guests, the opportunity to contribute while enjoying a night out made participation feel effortless—and meaningful. It’s a reminder that community support doesn’t always require grand gestures; sometimes it simply starts with showing up.

Events like Heroes Supporting Heroes highlight the unique way the community comes together—where those who protect and serve also lead by example in giving back. The presence of both the OC Sheriff’s Department and OC Fire Authority underscored a shared commitment to strengthening the community beyond their official duties.

By the end of the evening, it was clear that this wasn’t just a fundraiser. It was a celebration—of service, of partnership, and of the incredible athletes who continue to inspire.

And perhaps most importantly, it was a reminder that when a community comes together with heart, everyone leaves a little more connected than before.
