Dancing Toward a Brighter Tomorrow

In the heart of San Juan Capistrano, where the rhythms of history and community still echo through the mission arches, a nonprofit dance organization has been keeping tradition alive – one vibrant step at a time. Grupo Folklorico Nuevo Amanecer, founded in 2016, has become a vivid symbol of cultural pride and artistic expression under the guidance of co-directors Audelina Dominguez and Paola Dominguez, with dedicated instructors Julieta Vasquez and Karla Vasquez.

Created with the goal of sharing the beauty and diversity of Mexican folkloric dance, Nuevo Amanecer – meaning “New Dawn” – serves as much more than a performing arts group. It is a living bridge between generations, offering children, teens, and adults a rich educational experience rooted in heritage, discipline, and community.

“Our mission has always been to keep our traditions alive,” says Paola. “Every performance tells a story – of family, perseverance, and the joy of belonging.”

What began as a small group of local dancers meeting in community halls has grown into a celebrated presence across Orange County. Nuevo Amanecer performs at cultural festivals, school assemblies, and civic celebrations – from Dana Point’s lively Fiestas Patrias to the San Juan Capistrano Swallows Day Parade. Each event bursts with the familiar swirl of colorful skirts, the stomp of leather boots, and the proud energy of heritage expressed through motion. As audiences watch the dancers glide across stages in Anaheim, Fullerton, and Mission Viejo, they witness more than just performance – they see heritage in motion, passed from heart to heart.

A nonprofit with heart

Beyond the bright costumes and captivating choreography, there beats a deeper purpose. As a nonprofit, Grupo Folklorico Nuevo Amanecer provides lowcost dance education and cultural enrichment programs to underrepresented communities. Donations and sponsorships help fund scholarships, costumes, and travel expenses – making it possible for every child who dreams of dancing to have a chance to shine. Through workshops and community partnerships, the group inspires appreciation for Mexico’s diverse regional traditions while nurturing values of teamwork, respect, and confidence. “We’re not just teaching dance,” says Audelina. “We’re helping young people connect with who they are and where they come from.”

A new dawn for community and culture

In every twirl and every smile, Grupo Folklorico Nuevo Amanecer reminds us that culture flourishes when shared. Their work enriches Orange County’s cultural fabric and ensures that the next generation continues to celebrate its roots with pride and passion. Those interested in supporting or learning more about the group can follow their performances and community
events throughout the year – each one a testament to the beauty of diversity, tradition, and the “new dawn” these dancers bring to every stage.
