In the following interview, he addresses commonly asked questions regarding termite infestations and treatment.

Q: How much damage can termites cause to my property?

A: Termites eat wood continuously, 24/7, and even a single colony can contain hundreds of thousands of individuals. If left untreated, they can compromise a home’s structural integrity, sometimes for years before being noticed.

Q: How can I tell if my home has termites? What are the signs?

A: Common signs of subterranean termite infestation include mud tubes on exterior walls or foundations, discarded wings from termite swarmers, blistered or hollow-sounding wood or small holes in wood and piles of salt and pepper like piles of dust.

Q: What attracts termites to my home?

A: Termites are attracted to moisture, wood, and warmth. Wood piles near the foundation, leaky pipes and poor drainage can all increase the risk of infestation – it’s important to keep areas dry and remove wood debris.

Q: When are termites most active or visible?

A: Termites are active year-round, but homeowners are most likely to notice termites during swarming season in early spring when winged termites that look like flying ants emerge to start new colonies.

Q: How can I prevent termites from infesting my home?

A: Eliminate moisture around the foundation. Repair leaks promptly. Keep gutters and downspouts clear. Maintain an 18-inch gap between soil and wood portions of your home. Remove wood debris and mulch near the foundation and regularly inspect your home for signs of termites.

Q: What are the main types of termite treatments?

A: Professional subterranean termite treatments include soil treatments (liquid termiticides applied around the foundation); bait systems (stations that attract and eliminate colonies); wood treatments (direct application to infested or at-risk wood) and fumigation (mainly for drywood termites).

Q: Will fumigation kill all termites in my home?

A: Fumigation is 100% effective for drywood termites but not for subterranean termites, which require different soil treatments. The type of treatment depends on the termite species and the extent of the infestation.
