The legendary and undisputed “Voice of Christmas,” Johnny Mathis will brighten the holiday season when he returns to Segerstrom Center for the Arts December 9 and performs many of his greatest Christmas hits and personal favorites. Celebrating his 62nd year in the music industry, Mathis’ sublime vocal approach to music eclipses passing fads and trends. He has performed songs in an incredible variety of styles and categories – from music composed for stage and film to golden era jazz standards, contemporary pop hits, and, of course, holiday music – all of which have made him one of the most enduring vocalists in music history. Best known for his supremely popular hits including “Chances Are,” “It’s Not For Me To Say,” and “Misty”, Johnny has recorded more than 80 albums, including six Christmas albums.
Tickets for the Johnny Mathis Christmas Concert start at $79 and are available online at SCFTA.org, by calling (714) 556-2787 and at the Box Office at 600 Town Center Drive in Costa Mesa.
There comes a time when you just need a break. It might be too much time with the screaming kids, or one too many soccer games on the weekend, or that last minute studying for the Masters degree you’re working towards. It might just be that you haven’t seen your best friends in a couple months - not really anyway, and it is time for a break. The latter was my recent excuse to take full advantage to plan a girlfriend’s getaway weekend at the Fashion Island Hotel.
Forget the Vegas heat and neon lights: all I wanted was an upscale, relaxing weekend “away” with one of my close girlfriends. Formerly the Island Hotel, the resort boasts a multitude of entertainment options for untethered days under the California sun. Fashion Island, the iconic open-air shopping destination has enough Fortune 500 options to keep you busy for weeks, let alone a couple overnights with a spa treatment in between. Although we were only driving up from South OC, the “travel recovery massage” set the perfect, languorous tone for our weekend away. The hotel’s accommodations are nothing short of coastal glamour, featuring floor to ceiling windows and custom bedding. All tendering views of the gorgeous Pacific Coastline, and balconies to toast the evening away on.
We drank in the experience with a dinner at the Oak Grill, sipping from their long list of local wines and enjoying the patio fire pit. Classically trained chefs prepare bold menu options, ranging from tasty breakfast options and Sunday Brunch to elegant dinner entrees like their grilled salmon with pearl onions, prosciutto, couscous, and chimichurri. The truffle bacon mac and cheese was a decadently delicious side and the warm pineapple butter cake literally melted in our mouths. Staying local and seasonal, Oak Grill’s farm-to-table approach guarantees the freshest ingredients and most flavorful meals in the area. Happen to be there on one of the nights they host live acoustic music, and you’ll have a perfect backdrop to your delectable dinner.
When we decided that we needed to actually act like the girls-only party that we were, the hotel’s Aqua Lounge was the perfect venue to mix it up with their live DJ, handcrafted cocktails (we agreed that the Pear-a-dise was the best concoction either of us had ever sampled and the Boy George is all about cool presentation, poured over cotton candy) and small bites shared amongst the table. Good for everything from after-work drinks to a late night soiree, the Lounge turns up the volume on Newport Beach’s gourmet nightlife. Just want to swing through for happy hour? From 3-7pm every day of the week, the Lounge offers 50% off select items on their full menu, from craft beers to shared plates. The outdoor deck was the perfect place to unwind after a day on the beach, or in the shops. For our part, we used the time to relax and reminisce about the highlights of our girlfriend getaway and plan our next Fashion Island Hotel adventure.
The Fashion Island Hotel is located at 690 Newport Center Drive in Newport Beach. For more info or to book a reservation, call (949) 386-8361 or visit www.fashionislandhotel.com

If you’re hunting for fine furnishings and home accents, unique retail, health and wellness and THE place to experience the best variety of beers from leading OC breweries, look no further than Capistrano Home Center in San Juan Capistrano.
Although the center is visible to passerby on the southbound 5 Fwy., it can be a little tricky to find. These specialty retailers - tucked along the back side of the Plaza Del Obispo Shopping Center at the corner of Del Obispo and Camino Capistrano - might just be one of this historic city’s best-kept secrets.
Exit the southbound 5 Fwy. at Camino Capistrano, then turn right onto Camino Capistrano. When entering the center from northbound Camino Capistrano at the light just past Ricardo’s Place, turn right into the center, then turn right again to head straight back. When entering from eastbound Del Obispo, turn right and head straight to the back of the center.
Four performances only
August 10 – 12, 2018 • Segerstrom Hall
Segerstrom Center for the Arts is proud to present the World Premiere of ISADORA, a new full-length work created specifically for brilliant Russian ballerina Natalia Osipova, principal dancer of the Royal Ballet, former principal dancer with both the Bolshoi and Mikhailovsky ballets and a guest artist with American Ballet Theatre. She has appeared many times at the Center, creating new works choreographed for her and performing classics with visiting companies such as the Bolshoi, Mikhailovsky and ABT. To create this work of dance-theater that will bring the immortal Isadora to life, Osipova selected the award-winning Mariinsky Theatre choreographer, Vladimir Varnava. Veronika Part will perform the featured role of The Ballerina in the cast of 20 international dancers.
Duncan has been called the Mother of Modern Dance. She was beautiful and glamorous, but also one of the most controversial figures in dance history. As dancer, choreographer and teacher, she more than brought dance to a whole new level: she revolutionized the art form. Duncan is one of those extraordinary artists who dedicate their lives to their art. Yet in her journey, she also found herself surrounded by pain and tragedy. ISADORA, a co-production with Ardani Artists, follows this fascinating genius from her early career in the United States, through her loves, passions and, ultimately, her sudden and untimely death.
Vera is a six year old sweetie with a great personality. She absolutely loves to be petted and will follow you around in hopes of more snuggles. With her striking green eyes and pleasant demeanor, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better companion than Vera.
Seven year old Daisy is a sweet kitty who loves to go with the flow. She enjoys having company and likes being brushed but is far from high maintenance. Daisy is an independent cat who knows just when you need a cuddle.
This happy girl is Patty, a one year old bundle of fun. An overgrown puppy, Patty has lots of energy and just loves to exercise. Once she’s ready for some down time, you’ll find Patty is very treat motivated and takes instruction well. Patty would thrive in an active home where she can continue her training.
Mother and son duo Bonnie and Clyde quite the adorable pair. Bonnie is a great momma rabbit and dotes on Clyde whenever she can. Practically a mirror image of his mother, eleven month old Clyde is a curious bunny who loves exploring. Both rabbits are litter trained and would make wonderful house rabbits in a quiet, loving home.

When I was a child, I remember my parents moving our family into a new house, with pristine, white carpets. Beautiful to look at, but completely impractical when you consider that two young children would soon be tromping about.
As expected, my brother and I managed to ruin a swath of the floor covering in spectacular fashion … and in relatively short order. Enough so that it was replaced with a more manageable shade. Had my parents discovered the benefits of professional carpet cleaning services like those offered by the Laguna Niguel-based Beacon Carpet Cleaning, they certainly would have been better able to keep their flooring, countertops and upholstery from looking like they’d survived the tornado of their kids.
Ken and Linda Rogers, who founded Beacon in 1988, originally intended to simply find something they could do side-by-side. Both having spent their careers in various customer service oriented businesses, and searching for an opportunity to branch out, they decided upon carpet cleaning. In the years since, the couple and their longtime staff “family” have set the standard in residential and commercial carpet cleaning across Orange County.
An IICRC, Wools of New Zealand and Carpet and Rug Institute certified firm, Beacon takes the process of education to the next level, ensuring their team of professionals are trained to an unprecedented degree of sharpness and quality. The Master and Journeyman Certifications, highest available in the carpet cleaning industry, ensure that Ken and Linda’s customers enjoy a necessary service given by a trustworthy crew.
Fast forward (a few) years and I’m now a grown-up with kids of my own. By pure happenstance, our family inherited the gorgeous off-white carpeting that came with the home we purchased a few years ago. Add the happy fact that our abode has been the scene of many an afternoon play date and the addition of a puppy a couple of years ago and you can probably imagine the toll the carpets have taken. But unlike my parents, I have long recognized the importance of calling in the experts - well before the point of no return.
When we initially called Beacon Carpet Cleaning and MarbleLife Stone and Tile Restoration, Ken personally came out to give us an estimate. In utilizing their services, I can confidently share that he, Linda and their crew - many of whom have been with the company for over a decade - are not only highly professional, but are among the nicest people in the business. They did a great job and given that our kids and pup are still young and rambunctious, we’ve since called on Beacon several more times. Most recently, we reached out to Ken and his team in the hopes of bringing our dull, scratched marble floors back to their original shine and luster.
Again, Beacon more than delivered. I’d like to make special mention of longtime Beacon team member Jose, who is clearly a seasoned professional with a particular expertise in tile and stone flooring. In marveling at Jose’s handiwork, we can hardly believe how beautiful our flooring is now - the marble literally looks as though was newly installed.
Maintaining one’s floors, showers, countertops, upholstery, rugs, mattresses, and other areas around the home can be overwhelming: with or without children running amok. Since its inception, Beacon evolved to encompass a complementary business - Marblelife Stone and Tile Restoration with the goal of engaging its clients on as many surfaces as possible. Beacon providing protectants and cleaning services for almost anything you can think of: your Grandmother’s antique Oriental rug to yacht and boat cleaning in the harbors of Orange County.
“Each of these surfaces work together to create a cherished expression of your identity, dreams, and values,” says Ken. “It’s a unique space to celebrate with friends, or just to enjoy time by yourself. We can meet you in that space and help you protect what you invested in, keeping it looking its best for as long as possible.”
Beacon Carpet Cleaning and Marblelife is located at 27665 Forbes Road in Laguna Niguel. To connect with Ken and Linda, call (949) 496-6079 or visit www.beaconcarpetcleaning.com or www.marblelife.com
